Welcome to Art As Work. Whether you’re a working creative or cultivating a personal practice, I’m so glad you’re here. This is a space where I share Industry Insights from my work as a Design Director for Brands, and where I share my own work and process as an Artist and Illustrator. It all comes together in a mash up in this space.
Looking through my camera reel, I’m reminded of how FULL September was!
London Highlights:
Witnessing our friends marry at Islington Town Hall. Congrats to the bride, my dear friend and legend
. She writes The Nutrition D-List - it’s brilliant.Witnessing a room full of Scots going wild on the dancefloor as The Proclaimers is played at full volume at the wedding party. On repeat. Epic joy. (Can we move to Scotland please?)
Men in Kilts.
Great chats with my old Design pals at the Hen night and wedding
Dishoom breakfast wraps. 3 days in a row.
The Young V&A Museum. A phenomenal space for kids in London.
Sticky Toffee Pudding of dreams at The Angelic, Islington
Meeting Mr Bingo and buying some Art
Kew Gardens with Mum, Man & Son. Truly a paradise in the city.
Spending quality time with our friend and Artist Eva Ullrich at her group show ‘Waterlines’ at The Royal Geographic Society
Time with my bestie back in Hounslow, where I grew up
Mums’ chappatis and home-made apple pickle
I did of course pack a sketchbook and some supplies, which effectively went on a free trip and stayed firmly in their original bag, never seeing the light of London. (I managed one quick sketch during the kids’ nap.) Sometimes that’s how it goes! I’m sure you can all relate.
Back on the ‘Stack, September post recaps:
🎥 Paid ‘Brighton Vlog and Summer Sketchbook Tour’ (A meaty in-depth one)
💬 Paid About Style - A word challenge - A community discussion space where we started to share our reflections on style. Join in the discussion.
🎥 Free Summer Sketchbook Timelapse – Some chat for you all plus a faster peek into the pages of summer
🎥 Free Co-Swatch Session Replay – Our usual monthly chatty session for everyone. Good to have on as company for materials chat and general studio vibes.
🎥 Paid OUR FIRST EVER ROUND TABLE!!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOO
All about Style - I shared a quick presentation on how I approach ideas around Style, both for my own work and when I look for illustrators and artists to work with on my design projects. I shared a range of different artists work to help fuel the discussion, and then we all shared our own perspectives on our work. It was a brilliant first session, and thanks to everyone who joined and shared.
If you’re a creative looking for a space to share your work and process with other creatives, consider joining the community. At the next Round table, we’ll be discussing ‘Inspiration vs 'over-Influence’, and how we can ensure we don’t accidentally copy from other artists.
Coming up in October - Live Calls
I’m offering TWO FREE Co-Swatch calls this month, as I have neglected some of my friends in different time zones, so I want to have one lunchtime session and one evening session available. These sessions are really just a legitimate excuse to be distracted from our day jobs by playing around with some art supplies. Come along for some chat and company.
The next Round Table Session will be in November but members can sign up now.

Coming up - Posts
FREE 🎥 : That ‘AMA’s’ I mentioned a couple of months ago? Its COMING! If anyone here is new, and has an ‘anything question’, drop it in the comments!
PAID 🎥 : I’m diving deep into a personal project this month. A video on that, and my focus on inks, is coming soon.
Moving out of ‘play’ into ‘project’
I’ve been great at filling sketchbook pages this year, allowing myself to be really playful and exploratory. However, I’m now feeling that itch to get a project to completion. I shall attempt to bring that focus to October, and work deeper into my animals A-Z project, which I started last year! (It would be great to get some of the animal artwork on my kid’s wall before he turns 18. He’s 3.) If you’re new here, you can access the full sketchbook tour (free to all) here:
On my desk - Iots of loose sheets of paper and ink!
They’ll be more, I’m sure, but it is all churning around and will likely be spontaneous.
Thanks everyone! Your eyeballs and attention are much appreciated! I usually record an audio for the monthly post, but I have a terrible cold and sound awful, so apologies for that.
As always, I’m looking forward to connecting with you and your work in the community and in the comments! I always love to hear from you. ☺️
What an exciting month full of what sounds to be lots of lovely memories!
