41. Prep for the Live Session!
My Limited Colour Palette approach and some materials suggestions
I’m so excited and slightly nervous about co-hosting the upcoming LIVE session with
and her Introvert Drawing Club!I decided to base the session around one of my most popular posts, around building a limited colour palette. If you have time to watch this post before you join the call, it will help you prep!
If you’re not able to join the session, this post is now unlocked from the archive, so it is available for all you new subs to access.
We will have 15 minutes for each image:
1 x Landscape
1 x Portrait
1 x Still Life
1 x Animal
If you would like to prep one of your own images, feel free to grab something in your camera roll and turn it to black and white. Opt for something with a range of tones, a strong dark, mid and light tones, as this will give you a stronger image to work from.
Here’s a quick demo of how I prep my images on my iphone: (really basic, I’m sure most of you know how to do this anyway!)
Materials:
I suggest opting for dry materials, as I find you can colour select quickly and work faster, as 15 minutes goes fast! Of course, work with whatever materials you are most comfortable with. Good options:
Colour pencils (my choice for the session)
Markers
Neocolour / Pastels
Or any combinations of the above!
Beth Spencer here! I can’t wait to draw with you on Sunday.
This session is happening on the heels of my 100 days of 3 Materials Drawing Challenge!
Here’s what those illustrations taught me about limiting materials:
I like to choose one wet material first (usually a marker). Then I'll color important areas in that color.
I base my next choice on how it will mix1 with my wet material. I try to use two primary colors and consider what will happen when it mixes with my wet material. Water-soluble colored pencils and Neocolors are always my best friends at this stage.
The third choice2 is usually something I use to make lines, almost always an Inktense pencil. The darkest ones are super soft and glide right over the wet materials.
I'm so very excited about drawing with Raj and everyone. I also have a fun Secret Color Guessing Game planned for the start of the session!3 See you Sunday!
I wrote a bit more on that in this post.
Here’s my first 3 Materials Challenge post.
I’ll write a color at the beginning of the session. Try to guess which color I wrote by typing it in the chat.
At the end of the session, I’ll reveal the color I wrote down.
If you guessed correctly, I’ll give you a month’s free membership to Introvert Drawing Club! If you’re already a paid member, I’ll send you a sticker!
Thanks so much for sharing !
