Loose Lines & Warm Ups: Portraits 2

Rediscovering the joy of layering colour with markers

I had neglected my Tombow markers - and I had almost forgotten how much I enjoy using them.

Things I love about Tombow ABT water based markers:

  • The range of colours available is hard to beat

  • There is so much satisfaction in being able to scribble down colour over large areas quickly.

  • I also really enjoy the fact that you can see each mark - evidence of the movement of the hand.

  • Layering colour over colour is so satisfying - you can easily add depth this way.

Things I don’t love:

  • Non-refillable, so feels like a lot of plastic waste is generated.

  • The ink rubs off the barrel so quickly! So unless you label them with the correct numbers yourself, you’ll lose the shade number fast.

  • The length - not a standard barrel size, so you do need a longer pen case.

However, I enjoyed working with them a lot, so perhaps I need to consider some alternatives soon.

Here’s the result!

This may be my favourite spread

I’m not sure about the one on the left. Finished with a Stabilo Woody sketch, Damn those smiles!! So hard to draw!
